The origin of Comau dates back to the COnsorzio MAcchine Utensili established to gather all commercial activities of the Turin area manufacturers involved in the technological equipment supply of the Togliattigrad VAZ plant in Russia.

These companies merge into a company named Comau Industriale S.p.A.: MST S.p.A., Morando S.p.A., I.M.P. S.p.A., Colubra Lamsat S.p.A..

Comau S.p.A. is established. The new company gathered all plants and industrial activities of Comau Industriale S.p.A. and later is named Comau Finanziaria S.p.A..

Fiat Inc. (USA) establishes Comau Productivity Systems Inc. to develop commercial and industrial activities in North America.

Comau Finanziaria S.p.A. gains a majority interest in Italtech S.p.A., located in Brescia, a company specialized in injection moulding machines for plastic materials.

Comau Finanziaria S.p.A. takes over Berto Lamet (sheet metal dies) and U.T.S. (product and process engineering). Berto Lamet takes over TEA, a company specialized in injection moulds manufacturing.

Berto Lamet takes over Mecaner S.A. in Bilbao (Spain), with consolidated experience in sheet metal dies manufacturing.

Comau do Brasil Ind e Com. Ltda and Comau Argentina S.A. are established; the companies operate on the Mercosur market for all Comau Business Units. In Germany Comau Deutschland GmbH is established to guarantee a local presence in the German market for all Comau Business Units. Comau Productivity Systems is re-named Comau North America Inc. and its structure is amplified.

Comau S.p.A. gains a majority interest in Geico S.p.A. which produces painting systems for the automotive industry. Comau India Pvt. Ltd. in Pune is set up to operate on the local market and to control all the activities of Comau in the rest of world.

In March Comau Service is established with a mission to supply full maintenance services, from engineering to plant management, to the worldwide automotive market. Comau Service operates in Italy in four main sites and all over the world through more than 20 sites located at Customers' plants.
The sheet metal dies production plant of Comau Poland Sp.z.o.o., located in Tychy, begins to operate and, later that year, expands itsactivities to include maintenance services.

The body systems and welding guns activities of the French company Sciaky S.A. are taken over. Comau S.p.A. gains a majority interest in Renault Automation S.A. (France) specializing in engineering, metalcutting, mechanical assembly and body final assembly. In May Fiat S.p.A. takes over Progressive Tool and Industries Co. (PICO) US leader in body systems manufacturing.

In UK, the Pico company Pico Estil, located in Luton, re-named Comau Estil, operates through its offices in Birmingham, Dagenham, Nottingham, Shrewsbury, Saffron Walden and Solihull principally in the body systems areas. In South Africa, the Pico company Aims in Uitenhage, re-named in 2000 Comau South Africa Pty. Ltd. carries out important activities of body systems and dies development, generally addressed to the emerging markets.

Comau (Shanghai) Automotive Equipment Co.Ltd., in Shanghai is established to operate in the Chinese market.
In April Comau Belgium N.V. is established to develop maintenance services activities in Northern Europe and in November Comau Service's company, Comau Systems Services S.L., begins to operate in Madrid (Spain).

Comau S.p.A. acquires two companies operating in the automotive product and process engineering and industrialization area, the German Germann-Intec GmbH and the Romanian Team Resources Romania, subsequently re-named Comau România S.A.
Comau Australia is set up in Adelaide to operate with Australian Customers.
